Jyväskylän Metsänkävijät,
abbreviated as JyMe, is a boy scout troop founded in 1933 and based in Jyväskylä. JyMe is a relatively small troop, currently having around sixty active members. The small size is advantageous; everyone knows each other well, and there is a strong sense of community within the troop. The troop's meeting place, called "kolo," is located in Mäki-Matti, and the scout hut with a sauna is situated in Taka-Keljo on the shore of Lake Sallaajärvi.
Our activities are in Finnish, but we also communicate with guardians in English.
The scout troop Jyväskylän Metsänkävijät follows the scouting program defined by the Finnish Scouts. Activities in nature and camping are a strong part of the troop's activities. At the scout cabin by the shore of Lake Sallaajärvi, young scouts get their first exposure to wilderness skills before longer trips and camps.

Scouting is an affordable hobby. By paying around 60-80 euros per year, you can participate in the activities of your local scout group, district, and The Guides and Scouts of Finland. At the same time, you belong to the international scouting movement. The fee includes membership fees for both The Guides and Scouts of Finland and the scout district. Additionally, the local scout group collects its own membership fee (40€), which, together with its own fundraising and support from the parents' association, covers all the group's activities—meetings, camps, trips, food, etc. However, exceptions apply to hikes, camps organized by others, and international trips, which may have separate costs.
More information about the membership fee can be found here.
Scouting is adventures. Scouting is experiences. Scouting is something difficult to explain in words – you have to experience it yourself.
Youth and children meet weekly in packs and patrols (small groups) led by young peer leaders and adult scout leaders. In the weekly meetings, they learn not only fun but also useful skills: orienteering, cooking in nature, providing first aid, and so on. New things are learned by doing – not by reading from books. In scouting, we work together: we go on trips by walking, skiing, canoeing, or sailing. We sleep in tents, lean-tos, by the warmth of a campfire, or even in snow caves.
In scouting, you meet new people and make new friends. Although activities in nature are central, the most important thing is that everyone has fun. Scouting is a youth movement founded in the early 20th century by British Lord Robert Baden-Powell, which spread worldwide within a few decades.
In Finland, scouting activities are divided into local groups (lippukunta), districts (regional organizations), and The Guides and Scouts of Finland (national central organization). Within the local group, there are small groups led by young peer leaders and adult scout leaders. The entire local group is led by a group leader.
